Clinical leadership - report and exclusive video from HQIP medical director

Dear colleagues,

On 27 May this year HQIP held its first Clinical Leadership Seminar attended by over 50 national clinical leaders from 20 national clinical audits and stakeholder organisations.

Today we have published a report capturing the views of delegates and our planned next steps.
This is available to download from the HQIP website. Click here to download

A summary and key actions are listed below and, alongside the report, we have published a video interview with our medical director Professor Danny Keenan, reflecting on issues raised at the event and captured within the report.

Leadership Seminar Report - a summary and key actions

Challenges
During the event attendees expressed a number of key issues and discussed the barriers to providing clinical leadership to national clinical audit programmes. These included:
  • Data quality and timely access to data as key barriers to clinical teams making better use of national clinical audit data
  • Significant challenges for them in encouraging wider participation and greater use of findings from national audit
  • Difficulties faced by individuals and organisations identified as outliers national clinical audit programmes
  • A desire to improve data flows between NHS Digital and national clinical audit

Key actions
Following the event we carefully considered the viewpoints expressed and identified key actions to be taken forward, including:

  • The formation of a methodological working group to support audits tackling data quality challenges
  • Commissioning audits to be as timely as possible in their publication cycles, ideally providing real time data access to individuals and providers
  • The facilitation of a dialogue between NHS Digital and the national clinical audit community to support improved data flows
  • Further support to clinical leaders who are encountering difficulties in tackling outliers and their challenges

We will be sure to keep you notified on the progress of these actions through updates in the HQIP e Bulletin. To subscribe click here.
