| Pre-view period for Clinical Outcomes Publication (COP) programme 2017/18
|
|
|
The NJR is finalising preparations for implementing the 2017/18 round of orthopaedic clinical outcomes publication (COP) – an ongoing part of NHS England's transparency agenda. The data will be published via NHS Choices and also the NJR's Surgeon and Hospital Profile website.
Surgeon pre-view period:
Joint replacement surgeons' public-facing profile and COP data will be available to pre-view through NJR Clinician Feedback from 10:30am on Wednesday 15 November until 11:59pm on Tuesday 28 November.

The data periods covered are:
- clinical activity to 31 March 2017
- standardised mortality ratio August 2012 - August 2017

| NJR seeks new Regional Clinical Coordinator (RCC) members
|
|
|
The National Joint Registry Regional Clinical Coordinators Sub-committee serves to provide a two way link between the hospitals and surgeons providing data to the NJR and to the registry itself. It comprises of representatives from all regions across England, Northern Ireland, and Wales, and encompasses NHS and independent sector treatment.
RCC members are currently being sought from the following regions:
- East of England
- North Wales
- South East Coast
- South East Wales
- West Midlands x 2
To ensure a representative and balanced cohort of Regional Clinical Coordinators, the NJR would particularly welcome applications from consultants who specialise in lower limb joint replacement surgery, including ankle replacement.

| NJR Regional Event round-up
|
|
|
On 19 October 2017 the National Joint Registry held another one-day educational conference as part of its regional events programme on improving data quality in the registry. The event took place in central London and attracted over 100 hospital staff working in all sorts of non-surgical orthopaedic related roles.
The programme included presentations on the NJR’s ongoing data quality audit, service developments from the registry and also sessions on how the NJR works in practice for patient safety. Additionally, a collection of local case studies concluded the programme and were particularly well received.

Carol Harrison, NJR Data Quality Service Lead (Northgate Public Services), offered an update to the NJR's data quality audit work and how the registry is supporting hospitals to complete the audit.

Elaine Young, director of operations for the NJR, opened the day by outlining how NJR data is driving greater patient safety telling delegates: "Registries serve an invaluable function if we want the NHS to be the safest healthcare system in the world. Particularly device registries."

| NJR keynote for Arthritis Care Northern Ireland's Annual Professional Lecture
|
|
|
This year’s keynote address at the 10th Arthritis Care Northern Ireland Annual Professional Lecture was delivered by NJR medical director, Mr Martyn Porter.
Held on World Arthritis Day 2017, Martyn’s entertaining lecture outlined the origins of orthopaedic surgery before illustrating the current importance of the NJR, especially considering the volume of joint replacement procedures carried out today.

The National Joint Registry's Public and Patient Guides are available for free in hardcopy* for patients, pre-operative units, and GPs by calling the NJR Centre on: 0845 345 9991.

| Third annual NJR Data Quality Audit now underway
|
|
|
|
|
|

| Patient Consent at 93% during 2016/17
|
|
|
Outlined in the NJR's 14th Annual Report, the patient consent rate for 2016/17 was 93.0%, a slight decrease from 2015/16 (93.43%).
Patients can obtain a copy of the data held on their hip, knee, ankle, elbow or shoulder replacement operation recorded in the registry, providing they consented prior to their operation, by completing a Patient Data
Request form and sending the signed form to the NJR Centre at the address on the form.
We would normally expect to provide your data within two to three weeks, although during periods of high demand it may take longer.

| Joint RCS/NJR Research Fellowship 2018/19
|
|
|
Applications are now open for the NJR's Research Fellowship opportunity – a two-year partnership project with the Royal College of Surgeons – with the successful candidate to be appointed in early 2018, for a start 2018/19.
Closing date for applications is 29 January 2018 at 5pm. Interviews will be held in spring 2018 (date TBC).
The role is designed for orthopaedic trainees who wish to contribute to the analysis of data from
the National Joint Registry and undertake a period of independent research into arthroplasty.
